Did you know that many conventional coat shine products contain a cocktail of synthetic ingredients, most notably, silicone?
Silicones are hydrophobic which means they repel water. On the plus side, they coat the hair, giving it a temporarily silky feel. However, silicone also displaces water. When applied to horse hair, the very precious moisture content of just 3% is reduced and the protein bonds that make up 97% of hair become less stable and more liable to break. You'll notice that it also builds up over time, leaving the hair lank, harder to comb through and compelling us to use even more!
So that's why we decided to start from scratch and take inspiration from the world of natural (human) hair care.
Not only does the Hot Oil remove dust, dirt and grease after clipping, it acts as a leave-in conditioner for the coat, protecting it from rubbing, repairing any existing damage and adding a natural shine. We've agonised and tweaked the ingredients, testing them on our own yard of horses to make sure that it not only does the job on the day, but also improves the condition of the hair over time.
Have you seen hot oils that smell like ‘hot chocolate’ or ‘birthday cake’? These products contain artificial fragrance and may cause irritation to your horses (and your own!) skin.
Coat Elixir is made from 100% natural, renewable ingredients. We've avoided anything synthetic and replaced it with pure, unadulterated conditioning goodness from mother nature.
Hot oiling:
1. Add a splash (3-4 capfuls) to ¼ bucket of warm water – it should be about the temperature you’d have a human bath on a cold day.
2. After immersing your plastic-free cloth, squeeze out the excess water
3. Wipe over your entire horse, rinsing the cloth often (you’ll see the grime it’s removed in the water as you rinse the cloth!). No need to rinse.
Use regularly to maintain coat condition or add an extra bit of shine before a show.
This product can also be applied direct to the coat/mane/tail for extra shine as required, although bear in mind it is oil-based so use sparingly – particularly when it’s sunny!

How often should I use the Coat Elixir?
You can use it everyday if you want to! We recommend 2-3 times a week to prevent breakage and promote hair condition long-term.
Will it make the coat slippery or greasy?
Nope! Coat Elixir is completely silicone-free and residue-free, so it won’t leave that heavy, artificial “slick” feel you sometimes get from conventional oils. It absorbs into the hair and skin to nourish and soften from within, leaving a natural shine — not a greasy one.
Will it clog my clippers?
Absolutely not. We’ve tested Coat Elixir on hundreds of horses before clipping, from fine TB coats to chunky cobs, and it won’t gum up blades or affect your clip. Because it contains light, plant-based oils, it leaves the coat smooth, healthy and easy to clip. Obviously, as you dilute it with water, just make sure your horse is 100% dry before clipping as clippers and wet coats don't tend to mix well!
How much should I use?
We use 3-4 capfuls in ¼ of a standard water bucket. Slightly more or less won’t do any harm though!
Is it vegan?
Yes! There are no animal derivatives used in this product.
Is it cruelty-free?
Yes. We will not sell anything that has been tested on anything other than our own animals!
Can I use it neat?
You can, yes. Just be aware that it is an oil-based product so avoid using it neat in direct sunlight.
Can the Coat Elixir be used on horses with sensitive skin?
Yes, it is suitable for horses with sensitive skin, although please always patch test before use.
How should I store the Coat Elixir?
Store out of direct sunlight, in a cool, dry place.
What is the shelf-life of the Coat Elixir?
Our core ingredients have a lengthy shelf life, but we do recommend using your Elixir within 12 months.
Can I use the Coat Elixir on myself?
There’s nothing to stop you! The product has not been tested for human use but we may (ahem) have used it on our own skin with great results…
How long will a bottle last?
On the average horse, using the product on the coat 2-3 times a week, we’d estimate the product will last around 1 month.
How do I dispose of the packaging once it’s finished?
The aluminium bottle is 100% recyclable, so should go into your recycling bin. Just give it a quick rinse first.
