Meet the Ultimate Bug Barrier Stick – our best-selling Bug Barrier Balm, reimagined in an easy-to-use, twist-up stick.
Designed for quick, mess-free application, simply swipe directly onto areas that can be awkward to spray, including around the eyes, muzzle, ears, dock and sheath. No sprays. No chasing your horse around with a bottle. Just targeted protection exactly where you need it.
Inside, you'll find the same much-loved Bug Barrier Balm formula, packed with plant oils and essential oils, and completely free from DEET and synthetic insecticides.
Like all Honest Riders products, we developed it because we believed there had to be a better way.
During the 18 months we spent creating our Bug Barrier range, we uncovered some uncomfortable truths:
🌿 Many conventional insect-repellent ingredients (including DEET, Icaridin, Picaridin and Saltidin) have been tested on animals.
🌿 Many products rely on synthetic fragrances and unnecessary fillers rather than carefully selected ingredients that each perform a purpose.
🌿 Getting the balance right matters. Water-based products can evaporate quickly, while overly oily formulas can leave heavy residues.
Our Bug Barrier Stick is designed to deliver targeted, convenient protection, while being kind to your horse, kinder to the planet, and genuinely enjoyable to use.
Even the packaging has been carefully considered. The sturdy aluminium tube is designed to be reused for the life of the product and is endlessly recyclable when it eventually reaches the end of its journey.
Already use our Bug Barrier Balm? Think of the Stick as its perfect companion. The Stick excels on faces and other sensitive areas, while the Balm remains ideal for applying with a sponge or cloth over larger areas of the body.
Top tip: Apply to clean, dry skin and reapply as needed. A little goes a long way.
Caution: Avoid applying directly to exposed pink skin in strong sunshine.
If you prefer a spray, or want to combine the use of both, check out our Ultimate Bug Barrier refillable spray.

The Stick has been designed specifically for targeted application to sensitive areas, including around the eyes, muzzle, ears, dock and sheath. For larger areas of the body, we recommend our Bug Barrier Balm (applied with a sponge or cloth) or our Bug Barrier Spray.
No. The Bug Barrier Stick contains sustainably sourced beeswax from a local Wiltshire beekeeper.
Absolutely. We never test our products on animals other than our own horses.
Many conventional fly-repellent ingredients, including DEET, Icaridin, Picaridin and Saltidin, have historically been tested on animals. That's one of the reasons we chose a different path when developing our Bug Barrier range.
Yes! In fact, that's exactly how we use it.
Together they make the perfect fly-fighting team.
Yes. It has been designed with sensitive areas in mind and is suitable for most horses. However, as with any new grooming product, we always recommend carrying out a small patch test before first use.
Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
As it's made with natural waxes and oils, the Stick may soften slightly in very hot weather. If this happens, simply stand it upright in a cooler place and it will firm up again.
We recommend using your Bug Barrier Stick within 12 months of purchase for optimum performance.
We've formulated the Stick specifically for horses, so we don't recommend using it on people.
This will vary depending on how often you use it and how many areas you're treating. On an average horse, with once or twice daily application to the face and other sensitive areas, we'd expect one Stick to last around 3-4 weeks.
The aluminium tube is endlessly recyclable, so simply place it in your household recycling once it's empty.
Like any product made with natural waxes and oils, the Stick can soften in very warm temperatures. This doesn't affect its performance. Simply store it somewhere cool and upright until it firms up again.
